Welcome to the course site for Introduction to Linguistics (LING 301) at the College of Staten Island for the Fall 2020 semester.
This course will provide you with an overview of key topics in linguistics, the scientific study of language. We will often use New York English as a point of reference, but examples will also be pulled from other languages and varieties. Topics we’ll cover include:
- Phonetics and phonology
- Morphology, word-formation, and the lexicon
- Syntax
- Historical linguistics
- Language documentation
This class is asynchronous. The livestream, which takes place on Fridays at 6:00, is entirely optional. You will do readings, watch videos, and participate in online discussions through our course website. Quizzes and exams will be submitted through email. In addition, you must attend office hours at least once.
